Commutation of tithes 1839
In 1839 William Dobson of Hovingham surveyed the Scawton estate for the purpose of making a valuation for the ‘commutation of tithes to monetary payments’. The bulk of the land was owned by Sir William Worsley but he had just sold some of his land to Lord Feversham and there were also glebe lands on which tithes had been payable to Thomas Worsley, Rector of Scawton and to Otto Augustus Manners, Rector of Hawnby in respect of tithes from Scawton Croft
