It is interesting to note the additional payment of hens which appears to be a relic of the old feudal payments that used be made by peasants to the Lord of the Manor and the records themselves are puzzling as although George Wilson, Richard Proud, Thomas Nordus and Widow and William Hornby were recorded as tenants of sizeable farms in 1717 and 1721 their names do not appear on the rent roll of 1719. Nor do the tenants paying sizeable rents in 1708 and 1719 appear on the Papist registrations.
Joseph Sturdy’s tenancy of the fulling mill is an indication of the presence of weavers in Scawton and its location is thought to have been close to Cross Green where bleachers were working later in the century and not far from Hagg Hall where weavers were active during the same period.
